Race 1 – Maiden-20 sprints are predictable. Bucky Goldstein, first-race winner Saturday, made it 4-for-5 this meet by male favorites. Filly-mare favorites are 3-for-5, a trend that benefits class-drop comebacker Ramona Lover (4) in the Sunday opener.
Race 2 – Want more predictability? The past six months, trainer Simon Callaghan is 13-for-19 with favorites. Callaghan starts dropper Aristocratic (3), the program favorite and speed of the field.
Race 3 – Caray (4) has an upset chance in this maiden-40 sprint. He worked very well since he was claimed and gelded by Gary Stute. Caray is worth consideration at 10-1, facing logical contenders Ready Aim (6) and Spend It (8).
Race 4 – Literary Critic (1) is expected to set the pace in this turf route for maiden fillies and mares. She could steal it at 6-1, if front-runner Cho Has Zip (10) leaves her alone. The race sets up for favorite Pantsonfire (5), solid runner-up in her U.S. debut.
Race 5 – Dreamy Gal (4), second start back, is the one to catch in this sprint for Cal-bred N1X fillies and mares. Six and one-half furlongs is the most speed-friendly distance at the meet: 20 of 28 races won by a horse positioned first or second after the opening quarter-mile.
Race 7 – Classy Tune (5), sharp maiden win last out, is a legit favorite in this N1X sprint. Another favorite trained by Callaghan (see race 2 note).
Race 8 – St Patrick’s Day (3), 2yo full brother to American Pharoah, debuts as the chalk in this special-weight sprint. He and stablemate Zatter (10) worked in company Aug. 13, and worked heads-up. Jungle Warfare (6), runner-up last out in a fast race won by Tatters to Riches, has the experience edge.
Race 10 – Bombilate (4) ran well in her U.S. debut, worked well since, and should move up a bunch second start back in this N1X for fillies and mares on turf.
