Lady Eli turned in yet another powerhouse performance, running down Dickinson in the stretch to win the Grade 2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga on Saturday.
Hard held by Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. until the stretch of the 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares, Lady Eli accelerated like a well-tuned machine to take control of the race outside Dickinson a sixteenth from home and pull away to win by 1 1/2 lengths.
She paid $3.40 to win and was timed in 1:39.70.
Owned by Sheep Pond Partners and trained by Chad Brown, the Ballston Spa was Lady Eli's 10th win from 13 career starts. A five-time Grade 1 winner, Lady Eli in her last three starts has won the Ballston Spa, the Grade 1 Diana, and the Grade 1 Gamely at Santa Anita.
The Ballston Spa was Brown's third winner of the day and he now leads Todd Pletcher by one win in the trainer standings.
Brown had three runners in the five-horse Ballston Spa. Roca Rojo, who was taken back to last position early by jockey Joel Rosario, rallied to finish third, a neck behind Dickinson. Antonoe, Brown's other runner was keen to take on Dickinson early, was taken back off the pace on the backstretch, then lacked her customary late kick and finished fourth.
On Leave made a middle move in the race to challenge Dickinsn from the outside on the backstretch, but was outfinished and ended up fifth.
