The final Saturday of Del Mar summer includes the G1 Debutante for 2-year-old fillies, the G2 John C. Mabee for turf fillies and mares, and nine other races on the 11-race card. Preview …
Race 1 – Have Some Pride (5) might win this N2L claiming sprint as the favorite, but Cal Cal Li Gochis (9) is quicker. He drops in class, with a chance to steal it at 5-1.
Race 2 – Rag Top (8) has trained like she will fire first out in this one-mile maiden race for 2-year-old fillies. Bob Baffert has done this before – win with a 2yo first-time starter over a route of ground (examples: Show Me Da Lute, Surfcup, Tap It Rich, Blonde Fog).
Race 3 – Spin Me a Kiss (7) is yet another Phil D’Amato-trained sprinter that improved in distance races (examples: Hunt, Midnight Storm, Enola Gray). Spin Me a Kiss defeated state-bred foes last time with a front-end trip; same scenario in this open N1X.
Race 4 – Morgan S. (6) ran fast winning his debut two weeks ago with a 92 Beyer. He is favored in this Cal-bred N1X sprint. However, Gigantis (1) is training super for his return, while Private Marini (2) is a sharp claiming sprinter from Northern California.
Race 5 – Holy Ghost (1) made an eye-catching middle move in his debut two weeks ago; the second-start 2yo is likely to improve. The favorite is first-time starter Solomini (9).
Race 6 – The pick six starts with a turf route; Klondike Creek (11) tries again at the N1X condition. He finished in the money his first five tries at the level. Trust him? Nope.
Race 7 – How good is Spectator (3)? She enters the Debutante off a crushing win in the Sorrento. The competition is tougher this time. Moonshine Memories (2) and Just a Smidge (5) move up following impressive maiden wins. Looking for a longshot to sneak into the trifecta? The maiden Dancing Belle (7) has improved each start; she will rally late at 12-1.
Race 8 – St Patrick’s Day (1) is the most probable winner on the card. A full brother to American Pharoah, his runner-up debut was solid; long gone now that he has a race under his belt.
Race 9 – Is it Goodyearforroses (13) or Cambodia (4) in the Mabee? Goodyearforroses has the tactical edge; she will be forwardly placed in a race without much pace.
Race 10 – Jes Jaa (12).
Race 11 – Ice Kat (12).
