Fast & firm (for now) as we close in on a 13-race card at Gulfstream that features two $200,000 divisions of the Florida sire stakes, the Susan's Girl (race 10) and the Affirmed (race 12). Also on the card is the $75,000 Wasted Tears (race 5) for older female turf-route horses.
I say "for now" regarding track condition because there is rain in the area and a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. The precipitation is streaming north off the ocean, and things could be hit and miss all card.
No scratches in any of the stakes races, but one jockey change of note as Tyler Gaffalione replaces Eduardo Nunez aboard World of Trouble (8) in the Affirmed division of the sire stakes. World of Trouble only beat $25,000 maiden-claimers in his debut, but that was no ordinary maiden-claiming first start. The horse was very much an eye-catcher to the point that major owner Michael Dubb bought him sometime after the race, and he might well handle the jump in class today. His morning-line price of 5/1 already seemed too high to me, and with Gaffalione now aboard, it only means more action.
World of Trouble might well be too short to offer any value, and I guess that's a concern as well regarding the horse I'm interested in betting in the Susan's Girl division, Dessert Honeys (9). She's 6/1 on the line but I have to believe folks are going to gravitate toward her strong-finishing fourth in an open maiden race at Saratoga to a greater extent than that price. Have to demand something north of 4/1 to mitigate the difficulty of summer shipping to S. Florida, but the thought is Dessert Honeys can get a favorable setup today.
Underneath, or as other non-favored chances in multi-race wagers, I'm looking at Pantyhose (5) in the Susan's Girl and Highborn (4) in the Affirmed.
