Colonist (7) may be a danger from a stalking position in Sunday's Grade 2 Del Mar Derby at 1 1-8 miles on turf.
The distance should not be an issue for the colt, who is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.
Colonist beat 3-year-old maidens at 1 1-16 miles at Santa Anita on April 29 and was later fifth behind older horses in an optional claimer at a mile at Santa Anita on May 21.
Colonist has since run in stakes for 3-year-olds, finishing fourth by three lengths to West Coast in the Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby at 1 1-8 miles on dirt on July 15, and third, beaten three-quarters of a length, in the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap at 1 1-16 miles on turf here on Aug. 6.
The Los Alamitos Derby form has held up. Winner West Coast returned to win the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 26.
West Coast was not beaten far by Sharp Samurai in the La Jolla. Sharp Samurai is a 7-2 leading contender. Colonist is 6-1, and one to consider in exactas and trifectas.
