The pick six carryover is $27,073 at Los Alamitos. A challenging sequence covers races 4-9. Preview …
Race 4 – Fly as a Falcon (10), runner-up last out, is no cinch in this maiden-30 for 2yo fillies. Her runner-up finish was partly the result of a slow pace. Happy Maggie (7) worked well for her comeback; she is “must use” adding blinkers. And though She’s R Cause (9) has not trained that great according to Andy Harrington of National Turf, trainer Molly Pearson is rolling. Her five starters this meet produced two wins, two seconds. She’s R Cause is by the good debut sire Creative Cause (16 percent first-out winners). Her dam is multiple stakes winner Swearingen, who earned $673k but produced little of consequence as a broodmare. And yet, She’s R Cause merits a longshot look at 10-1.
Race 5 – Clifton Beach (7) and Malibu d’Oro (9) are the key entrants in this maiden-20 sprint. However, both are front-runners that could get in each other’s way. Clifton Beach “won” last time but was disqualified for interference; Malibu d’Oro has been gelded since raced. The post-position draw benefits the favorites – 11 of the 14 races this meet at five and a half furlongs were won from the outside half of the field. Sunday Nap (2), Flash Henry (3), Two Thirty Five (5) and longshot Ralph Jacobs (1) have a look in a tough race. Or maybe the “best horse” will win, plain and simple. That is Clifton Beach.
Race 6 – Sweetwater Gal (9) has speed, she can finish, and she drops in class with figures that are appropriate for this $8k claiming N2L level. No knocks on the favorite. Rock All Day (4) also fits on numbers; the five-furlong distance suits her perfectly.
Race 7 – The favorites in this special-weight route are easy to knock. Wise Curlin (7) has not started since February; Thorpe d’Oro (8) regressed every start following a big debut, and Camino de Estrella (3) is a seven-start maiden. Brahms Forest (1) from off the pace and turf-to-dirt Captain Call (5) have upset potential in a tricky race.
Race 8 – A pair of sharp sprinters go two turns in this N1X mile – Americanize (5) and Leading Score (1). Shackleford Banks (6), a 15-for-36 pro, will roll late in a race that sets up for a closer. Looking for a bomber? General Ike (8) has trained particularly well since he was claimed and gelded by trainer Mark Glatt. How does Glatt do with new geldings? Check out Sharp Samurai, who is 5-for-7 since being gelded, including a win in the Del Mar Derby. Listed at 12-1, General Ike is an attractive gamble.
Race 9 – California-bred 2yo maiden fillies go five and a half, Phil D’Amato-trained first-time starters Carrie’s Success (6) and Carpathia (3) have been working in company at San Luis Rey Downs. Carrie's Success is believed to be quicker, while Carpathia will rally. Either could win, but both will be better next out. A return to Los Al benefits favorite Goodlooknbroad (10).
Challenging sequence Sunday at Los Alamitos. First post is 2 p.m. Post time for race 4, first leg of the pick six, is listed at 3:28.
