Saturday preview--Woodbine Mile Day

A hot/humid day for the 13-race Woodbine Mile card. Lane 1 and firm for the turf.

The speedy morning line favorite Good Bye Greg is expected to be scratched from the sixth, the G3 Bold Venture, in favor of a stakes at Arlington. This means there's considerably less speed in the six and a half-furlong dash, which could benefit Boreal Spirit or Puntrooskie. Circle of Friends is trying to rebound off a rare loss in an overnight stakes for 3yos.

Coming off a narrow loss to the mighty Lady Eli, Maryland shipper Quidura stands out in the eighth, the G2 Canadian, which is the first leg of a Pick 5 with a $200K guarantee. Elysea's World was most recently fourth in a key restricted stakes at Saratoga for trainer Chad Brown, who ran 1-2 in this about nine-furlong turf route last year.

Hawkbill, a Group 1 winner with an excellent European record, will be odds-on in the 10th, the G1 Northern Dancer Turf. He may try to lead all the in the 12-furlong marathon. The main concern of his connections is that he's had a tendency to get worked up pre-race, which might not happen here with Lasix added. Messi looks next best.

The featured race 12, the G1 WO Mile, can probably be parred down to World Approval, Deauville, Mondialiste, and Lancaster Bomber for this final leg of the $300K Pick 4. The latter should be attending what could be a slow pace, and he appears to have a big shot to become the first 3yo to win the race under Wayne Lordan, who's expected to ride at the listed weight of 112 pounds.

The Jackpot Hi 5 carryover heading into the nightcap is $1.425 million, and there's a mandatory payout on the 20-cent base bet. My preferences in the higher positions are Katrina's Way, Orphan Queen, Prized Bourbon and Office in the Sky and Rockport Dancer.
