A pair of second-start juvenile fillies stand out Saturday at Los Alamitos. Preview …
Race 1 – Here’s a stat you don’t see often in Southern California. Maiden-20s are the most predictable class level on the circuit, yet maiden-20 favorites are just 1-for-8 this meet. Class droppers Hi Heat Boy (2) and Adventurous (4) are co-favorites, and logical.
Race 2 – Apprentice rider Evan Roman leads the standings (8 wins and 7 seconds, 30 mounts). He takes over on Wheresthemoneyjack (6), a colt racing for the first time at the bottom class level for winners – $12.5k claiming non-winners of two.
(Wheresthemoneyjack has been scratched)
Race 5 – Chatty (2) is the first standout maiden filly, favored in this special-weight sprint. Her debut, from the outside post at Del Mar, was impressive. She took a right-hand turn when the gates opened, recovered to press/set a fast pace, and held second. The winner Piedi Bianchi returned to finish second in the Del Mar Debutante.
Chatty only needs a clean break to win second time out. However, buyer beware. Prior to her debut, Chatty had ducked out in morning works. Her miscue was not a total surprise. The fastest in the field, Chatty “should” win at odds lower than her 2-1 program price if she runs straight.
Race 6 – Pat the Bear (3) looks like a gate-to-wire winner in this $6,250 claiming sprint, non-winners this year. He is fast, and shortens to five and a half. He is the 5-2 favorite.
Race 7 – Want to gamble on a pair of double-digit longshots? Of course you do. Avicii (5) is the sensible favorite dropping to N1X/optional $40k claiming. But the maiden win by Haveiture Way (11) was better than it looks. She set a strong pace and held; two also-rans from the race returned to win their next start. Haveiture Way is listed at 12-1.
The second longshot is Resilient Humor (3), who has trained well for her comeback, runs fresh (debut winner) and likes the track (winner only start Los Al). She is 15-1. Avicii “should” win, but Haveiture Way and Resilient Humor should outrun their odds.
Race 8 – Exuberance (3) is the second standout filly, 5-2 second favorite in the $100k Barretts Debutante at six and one-half furlongs. Her solid third-place debut earned a good number, she worked well since, and is likely to mow them down. The favorite Ismelucky (1) has not raced since May, not raced beyond four and a half furlongs, and is buried on the rail. Posts 1-2 this meet are a combined 3-for-72 in Los Al sprints.
First post Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m.
