Texas Chrome, who in July became just the second Texas-bred millionaire behind Groovy, has been retired, owner Danny Keene said on Wednesday. The horse has been intended for a start in the Fayette at Keeneland, but precautionary X-rays revealed a "little" hairline fracture in a knee and the decision was made to retire the horse to stud, said Keene.
"He's done his dues," Keene said. "Let's raise some babies."
Keene said he is determining whether Texas Chrome will stand in Texas or Arkansas and whether he will be a private stallion or stand commercially.
Texas Chrome last raced Sept. 24 and finished fourth to Iron Fist in the $175,000 Governor's Cup at Remington Park. He has since been working in Oklahoma City. Texas Chrome retires with a record of nine wins from 22 starts for earnings of $1,033,262. He won eight stakes races, including the Grade 3 Super Derby and Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby.
Texas Chrome is a 4-year-old by Grasshopper and a half-brother to Grade 2 Pocahontas winner Patrona Margarita.
