Voodoo Song, who was the talk of Saratoga when he won four races during that relatively brief meeting, heads a field of 11 entered Wednesday for the $100,000 Hawthorne Derby on Saturday at Hawthorne Race Course.
The Hawthorne Derby, a 1 1/8-mile grass race, is back following a one-year absence. Hawthorne lacked purse funds to run a stakes schedule during their last fall-winter meeting.
The New York-based Voodoo Song, who is trained by Linda Race, capped his Saratoga streak with a front-running win over the talented Yoshidain the Grade 3 Saranac Stakes on Sept. 2. Back on Sept. 30 as the 3/5 favorite in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Derby at Laurel, Voodoo Song led most of the race but was caught in deep stretch by Just Howard and finished second. Local rider Edgar Perez was named to ride a likely heavy favorite who will be racing over a deep autumn course that has taken plenty of recent rain and will be far different from the turf over which he raced at Saratoga.
Adonis Creed, who was second last out in the Jefferson Cup at Churchill while making his first start for trainer Brad Cox, and the Mike Maker trained Bronson, who was fourth in the same race, could be second and third choices. Phat Man, most recently second in the Super Derby, will also have some support, as might My Bariley, whose best recent race came over a yielding course.
The other entrants are Imposing Will, High On Sugar, Thirsty Actor, Blue Sky Kowboy, All Right, and Red Corvette.
