Beliveau in the eighth was the lone front-running winner on the evening. He fought off the eventual runner-up, Stay Determined, to win the $8K sprint by daylight under Luis Contreras. The favored Bear On Fire, who was seeking his fourth consecutive win, came up empty in the lane and was claimed by Beliveau's trainer, Marty Drexler. Beliveau was haltered by trainer Nick Gonzalez for Windways Farm, one of his previous owners.
Second-leading rider Contreras also won the opener on Vintage Time, and top jock Eurico Da Silva scored once. Contreras now has an opportunity to make up ground on Da Silva, who will be serving a suspension that covers Friday-Sunday and the following Wednesday, with the exception of Sunday's two stakes.
Trainer Norm McKnight found the mark with Reimagined. His win total of 72 puts him four behind leader Mark Casse.
The handle was $2.1 million.
No carryover in the Jackpot Hi 5, which was won outright, returning nearly $34K.
