Big Score, who was part of the 14-horse main body of the Breeders' Cup Mile when pre-entries were taken earlier this week, will instead start tomorrow at Santa Anita in the Twilight Derby, trainer Tim Yakteen said Friday.
Big Score is the second horse to be taken out of the BC Mile on Friday; trainer Richard Mandella earlier announced Bal a Bali has been retired. Two other horses among the 14 selected to start also figure to defect for other races, Senga to the Filly and Mare Turf, and Churchill to the Classic. Roly Poly was entered with first preference in the Filly and Mare Turf, but trainer Aidan O'Brien suggested this week she might be a more likely runner in the Mile. Decorated Knight has first preference in the Turf, and as of Friday it appeared his connections were leaning toward a start in that race.
If Senga, Churchill, and Decorated Knight along with Bal a Bali and Big Score come out of the Mile, all the pre-entrants with the Mile as their first preference will get into the race. Home of the Brave and Karar, the first two excluded pre-entrants with the Mile as first preference, are in, and Om, Mr. Roary, and Frank Conversation all now appear to have a path toward making the race.
Midnight Storm and Hunt, two other ecxcluded horses, have first entry preference in the Dirt Mile and Turf, respectively, and both have spots in the main body of those races.
