Del Mar: Mandella announces Bal a Bali retirement

Bal a Bali, the winner of two Grade 1 turf races for milers in Southern California this year, has been retired, trainer Richard Mandella said on Friday and will not start in the Breeders' Cup Mile at Del Mar on Nov. 4.

Bal a Bali will be sent to Calumet Farm in Kentucky to begin stud duty in 2018.

Mandella said that Bal a Bali was not as sharp as earlier this year, leading to the decision. Bal a Bali won the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile in March and the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile in June, but was sixth in the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on Aug. 20 in his latest start.

Owned by Calumet Farm, Bal a Bali has won 15 of 26 starts and $1,258,268. He won nine stakes in Brazil in 2013 and 2014 and three stakes in this country.
