Diversify, the Jockey Club Gold Cup winner, worked a sharp half-mile in 46.91 seconds Saturday morning over the Belmont Park main track, but his connections still have not decided if he'll run in the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
Diversify worked on the inside of a stablemate. The pair went off a quick opening quarter in 22.79, and Diversify pulled away from the workmate inside the sixteenth pole.
"He worked terrific. See how he cools out, see how he is tomorrow, talk to Lauren and Ralph [Evans]," said trainer Rick Violette. "If this is a spot we think we can win, we'll be on the plane."
Violette does have a spot on the Tuesday plane for Diversify, who was pre-entered in the Classic. Final entries for the Classic will be taken Monday and Violette indicated that he probably would only enter if he intended to run.
Violette has concerns that the major contenders such as Collected, Arrogate, and Gun Runner all have a similar running style as the speedy Diversify.
"Also, this might be the deepest Classic in a number of years," Violette said. "It’s not a two-horse race and that’s what we've been dealing with the last few years."
