Welcome to closing day at chilly Keeneland, where the main track starts out sloppy after rain all night in Lexington, and we are OFF the turf for all scheduled events. My car told me it was a brisk (to put it mildly) 39 degrees on the way from my boarding barn to the track this morning. Yee-haw.
The feature today is a stacked edition of the Grade 2 Fayette, featuring the 3-year-old McCraken taking on his elders, including Lukas Classic winner Honorable Duty and Neolithic, who turned in such creditable efforts in the Pegasus World Cup and Dubai World Cup. Today will be the last day of on-air action for Keeneland's popular handicapper and analyst Mike Battaglia, who will step down from his on-air race day duties after today's card, the track has announced. Battaglia will continue to set the track’s morning-line odds and provide picks for its website.
A live jockey race coming into today, which today's scratches and changes could play a key role in. Ricardo Santana, Jr., chasing his first Keeneland title, leads the way with 17 winners, and has four mounts today after changes. Robby Albarado has 15 winners and five mounts today; Julien Leparoux has 14 winners and four mounts today.
Mike Maker has locked up his sixth trainer title with 12 wins to nine for Steve Asmussen, who has no entries today, and Mark Casse (seven wins), whose only entrant was a scratched also-eligible. Despite the scratch of a favored entry today, Ken and Sarah Ramsey's operation has locked up the owner title, with seven wins to four for John Oxley, who has no entries today. This will be the 19th title for the Ramseys.
Race 1: Scratch #5, Avisionofchocolate.
Race 3: A couple of key changes. Santana picks up the mount on #3, Pray for Kitten, who is 3-1 on the morning line. Scratch #10, Par Play, who was 7-2.
Race 5: OFF. Scratch #2, Blue Lute, #4, Non Regrette, #6, Tomahawk Kitten (Leparoux's mount), #10, Art of the Dream, and all four also-eligibles.
Race 7: OFF. Scratch the favored Ramsey entry (#1/1A), Bingo Kitten and Gorgeous Kitten, the latter of whom would have had Leparoux aboard. Also scratch #3, Boomin Goose, and #5, Mr Cub.
Race 8: Scratch #4, I'mluckysgirl.
Race 9: In the featured Fayette, scratch #3, Fear the Cowboy, who was the co-longest shot at 15-1. No Super High 5 as a result.
Race 10: OFF: Scratch #3, Billboard, #4, Lovin Empire, #9, Defrock (Albarado's mount), #10, Prudence, #12, Lola's the One, an all four also-eligibles.
