DEL MAR, Calif. – Unique Bella was assigned post 11 in a full gate of 14 as the heavy favorite in the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, to be run Saturday at Del Mar.
A winner in 5 of 6 career starts for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, Unique Bella will have Mike Smith aboard as the 9-5 favorite on the Del Mar morning line. Smith won the Filly and Mare Sprint last year aboard Finest City, who returns this year with Corey Nakatani to ride.
Other major contenders in the seven-furlong race include Finley’sluckycharm, a winner in 10 of 13 career starts, and the respective 1-2-3 finishers in the Grade 1 Ballerina – By the Moon, Highway Star, and Carina Mia.
Unique Bella is a 3-year-old, and no 3-year-old has won the Filly and Mare Sprint from 10 prior runnings.
The Filly and Mare Sprint is the sixth of 12 overall races Saturday and the third of nine straight Breeders’ Cup events.
