Ulysses drew a favorable position in post 5 for Saturday's Breeders' Cup Turf at 1 1-2 miles at Del Mar.
Fourth in the 2016 BC Turf at Santa Anita as a 3-year-old, Ulysses (5) has a better draw than some of his main rivals, notably Beach Patrol (12). Beach Patrol won the Arlington Million and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic in his last two starts, emerging as a clear leader among the American-based hopefuls.
A single-digit draw would have been better for Beach Patrol, although post position for this race is not as big of a factor as it would be in a mile-turf race with a shorter run to the first turn. The BC Turf starts on the backstretch and has a decent run to the first turn, allowing the runners to settle through the first two furlongs.
Highland Reel (3), who won the 2016 BC Turf, is fairly drawn for what is likely to be a prominent position from the start.
