The first Breeders’ Cup race of the day Saturday comes in race 4 and is the $1 million Juvenile Fillies.
This Juvenile Fillies features an interesting inter-sectional battle between the west’s top 2-year-old filly in the undefeated Moonshine Memories, winner of the Chandelier and the Del Mar Debutante; the midwest’s best in Heavenly Love, who was very impressive visually winning the Alcibiades; and the leader in the east in Separationofpowers, who rebounded from a tired third in the Spinaway after being hooked in a speed duel with a commanding score most recently in the Frizette.
Trips, of course, will have a big say in the outcome, on a number of different levels. Separationofpowers, who will be making her first start going two turns today, must break from the 13 hole. That’s a tough ask, but it might not be as tough as it usually is if Del Mar’s main track plays Saturday the way it played in Friday.
Speed was good on Del Mar’s main track on Wednesday and Thursday, the first two days of the meet, and when speed is good it usually means the inside is good since speed horses naturally gravitate toward the inside once they clear. But the pendulum swung in the opposite direction Friday, when outside paths on the main track seemed to be the place to be. So if today's track plays like Friday, Separationofpowers will be out on the best part of the surface.
And if the track plays like Friday, it could be trouble for Heavenly Love, my pick here. Heavenly Love breaks from the rail. She might get locked in down inside, or she might have to be used early in an effort to get off the inside, if, that is, her connections feel the inside is best avoided.
Moonshine Memories, meanwhile, is well drawn in post seven and should have little difficulty working out a trip of her liking.
In any case, this inter-sectional battle in the Juvenile will likely be a major determinant in the 2-year-old filly Eclipse Award.
