Trainer Tim Hills became the latest member of the 2,000 win club after Paul Braverman's Dom the Bomb sprinted to an easy victory over the turf in Friday's 5th race at Gulfstream Park West.
When asked what winning 2,000 races meant to him, Hills' first response was "it means I've been around a long time."
Hills began his training career in his native New Hampshire at Rockingham Park, moved to south Florida in the mid-80's but still remains a summer regular at Monmouth Park. He said prior to today, the most memorable moment in his career came in August of 1987 when Sans the Shadow won an allowance race at Saratoga.
"I watched the race from the second floor in the grandstand and could have flown to the winner's circle I was so happy," said Hills, who also trains the millionaire New York bred Kharafa. "Winning a race at Saratoga was my first real ticket proving I could go elsewhere(outside New England) to win races. Today was the first time I received any real recognition like this. I wasn't even aware of it when I won my 1,000th race, I don't think I figured it out until about a month later. This was also special because Dom the Bomb is owned by Paul Braverman, who first gave me horses back in 1980, at Suffolk Downs, and has remained loyal ever since."
