The mutuel field, the 24th or "all others" option, was the 2-1 favorite heading into the final day of betting into Pool 1 of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opened Thursday at noon and runs through Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern.
As of early Sunday morning, and with $94,151 in the win pool, the field was followed by Bolt d'Oro (5-1), Good Magic (11-1), McKinzie (11-1), and Montauk (15-1). Another $41,813 had been bet in exactas.
This is the 20th year Churchill Downs has offered parimutuel futures, and the field has closed as the favorite in Pool 1 every time.
Six separately listed horses ran Saturday at Churchill in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, the only notable 2-year-old stakes to be run while Pool 1 is open. Enticed was the winner by a nose over Tiz Mischief.
Pool 1 coincides with wagering into the Derby Sires wager, which is being offered for the third year. With $17,436 in the win pool, Medaglia d'Oro was the 4-1 favorite, followed by Curlin (7-1), the field (7-1), Tapit (11-1), and Street Sense (11-1).
Pool 2 is set for Feb. 9-11, Pool 3 for March 9-11, and Pool 4 for April 6-8. The Kentucky Oaks future wager will coincide with Pool 3.
Last year, combined handle was $221,801 on Pool 1 and $44,150 on the Sires futures. The eventual Derby winner, Always Dreaming, was part of the Pool 1 field, which closed as the 6-5 favorite. Aggregate handle for all four pools toward the 2017 Derby was $1,409,856.
The record for handle in a single pool is $631,304, set in 2012, while the record for aggregate handle in a single year was $1,665,990 in 2005.
Real-time odds and will-pays are available through various modes, including on television monitors at tracks and wagering outlets, as well as at kentuckyderby.com.
In the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination.
The 144th Derby will be run May 5, 2018.
