In what should certainly make the number 1 slot on ESPN's Bad Beats list for the week, one anonymous player lost what appeared to be a certain $571,744 payday after Cryogenic ducked from a righthand stick and lost his rider, Emisael Jaramillo, while approaching the wire with a seemingly insurmountable lead in Thursday's finale at Gulfstream Park. Cryogenic, who went postward at odds of 8-1, was one of two single tickets alive for the entire jackpot in the $.20 Rainbow 6, a pool that had already survived for 14 consecutive days.
Jaramillo was taken by ambulance to the hospital complaining of pains in his chest but while able to move all his extremeties following the frightening incident. Although he fell in front of the entire field, none of the other horses appeared to strike Jaramillo, with early reports indicating it was his own horse, Cryogenic, who might have stepped on the stricken rider as he lay helpless on the turf.
Revolving Son, a 14-1 shot, was the beneficiary of the mishap, earning the victory which was the third win on the day for trainer Armando De le cerda.
There will be a carryover of $449,447 in the Rainbow 6 when racing resumes on Friday.
