Jockey Florent Geroux will be off his mounts on Friday at Fair Grounds due to a family matter in his native France and his status for Saturday is to be determined, agent Doug Bredar said on Thursday.
Geroux last rode at Fair Grounds on Tuesday, but after the first few races boarded a flight to France to attend to his father, retired jockey Dominique Geroux, who fell on Christmas morning. Geroux also was off his mounts Thursday at Fair Grounds.
Bredar said doctors have ruled out a stroke for the elder Geroux, 67, but there is not yet a diagnosis.
“They’re still assessing what is really going on here – what the next step will be,” Bredar said. “Florent is still waiting to hear from some specialists.”
Bredar said Florent Geroux’s status for the Saturday card at Fair Grounds should be known Friday.
“There’s still a shot he could come back to ride here on Saturday,” Bredar said. “It’s kind of unlikely. I think he’ll probably stay through the weekend and be able to start riding again next week. We’ll hear from him sometime tomorrow.”
Geroux is closing out one of the best years of his career, with 177 wins from 998 mounts through Thursday, chief among his victories the Breeders’ Cup Classic aboard Gun Runner. His mounts have earned $14 million in 2017.
