Beginning Feb. 1, Turfway Park will offer a $200 bonus to owners in overnight races in which a field goes to post with 10 or more betting interests.
"We're calling the program the TENacious Turfway Park Starter Bonus," said General Manager Chip Bach. "The name refers to the tenacity of horsemen who tough out winter racing, and we want to reward that."
Although field size has been large this winter at Turfway - averaging over 8.9 starters per race since its holiday meet began Nov. 29 - historically fields diminish after Oaklawn Park opens in January and the middle of winter arrives. Last year the average field size was 7.2 starters a race during February.
"As we head into the last two months of our racing season and other tracks begin to open, we want to give owners and trainers an extra incentive to race with us," Bach said.
Along with other winter-racing tracks Turfway has been hard hit by extreme cold over the past week, resulting in four cancellations.
