Ax Man, a half-brother to the 2007 champion 2-year-old filly Indian Blessing, was an easy winner of a maiden race for 3-year-old maidens in Monday's sixth race at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, Ax Man was always near the front and pulled clear in the final quarter-mile to win by 9 1-2 lengths. Ax Man ($4.80) ran six furlongs in 1:09.43.
"I think he towered over them," Van Dyke said. "He broke sharp and he put me where I wanted to be."
Ax Man is owned by breeders Hal and Patti Earnhardt and trained by Bob Baffert.
Ax Man is by Misremembered, who will stand the 2018 breeding season at Barton Thoroughbreds in Santa Ynez, Calif.
The maiden race was restricted to horses that were bought for $100,000 or less at public auction or were bred by their owners. Ax Man was the only homebred in a field of 11.
