McKinzie performed as expected in Saturday's Grade 3 Sham Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile at Santa Anita, drawing off to win the $100,000 race by 3 1-2 lengths as the 1-5 favorite.
Ridden by Mike Smith, McKinzie was timed in 1:36.58. Smith had McKinzie behind pacesetter All Out Blitz for the first six furlongs, challenged the leader in early stretch and quickly took command of the race.
All Out Blitz (14-1) held second, four lengths in front of 6-1 My Boy Jack. Shivermetimbers was fourth, followed by City Plan and Here is Happy.
Mourinho was scratched on Saturday morning by trainer Bob Baffert in favor of the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park later this month.
McKinzie is unbeaten in three starts, with a little help from the stewards. McKinzie won his debut in a six-furlong maiden race at Santa Anita on Oct. 28. In his stakes debut, McKinzie finished second in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity on Dec. 9 and was placed first after race winner Solomini was disqualified for a bumping incident.
