Touts and notes, Sunday at Santa Anita …
Race 1 – Can shipper Mongolian Greywolf (5) wire this N2X turf route at 5-2? Although his odds offer no value, ’Greywolf could be loose. Problem is, the front end is not the best position at a mile and one-eighth on turf – five of six turf races this meet at the distance were won from the middle or back of field. The back-in-six-days D. Jacobson trainee Any Questions (4) figures as a contender.
Race 3 – Interesting maiden sprint, 4-year-olds and up; fast-working comebackers Lookie Loo (4) and Twisted Road (5) are tough to separate. Both showed promise last spring; both were were sidelined after one start. B. Baffert trains favorite Lookie Loo; R. Mandella trains second choice Twisted Road, who adds blinkers. Two-horse race? Maybe it’s a one-horse race based on commentary by workout analyst Toby Turrell in the Daily Racing Form clocker report.
Turrell wrote this about Twisted Road’s Jan. 14 blinkers-on workout, five furlongs in 1:02.60. “Added blinkers. It led to an eye-catching move when working much the best over talented mate Peace. RATING: B+”
Race 4 – Speakers (1) stretches back to two turns as a solid favorite in this N1X turf route for Calbred fillies and mares. Her recent sprint was merely a prep; two turns is her deal. Crazy stat from Formulator regarding Speakers’ trainer Paddy Gallagher. The past four years, Gallagher-trained turf favorites are 24-for-44, a 55 percent win rate and flat-bet profit. Solid. Forbidden Command (7) is not impossible, first off $8k claim by G. Vallejo.
Race 5 – Yes, Dalsaros (6) ran very well in fourth-place comeback sprint. And if she improves enough to reproduce her maiden route romp on this track one year ago, she will win for the second time in her career. However, preference is six-time winner Plastered (2), who has won at this N1X condition and is entered for the optional $40k tag.
Race 7 – This nine-furlong N1X turf route is a split of race 1, program favorite Lifeline (4) is no sure thing at 5-2, first since April. The main contenders, in this handicapper’s opinion, are Oscar Dominguez (6), Unusual Meeting (1) and Goodwood Mirage (5). If they start at their respective program odds of 4-1, 6-1 and 12-1, one could bet all three to win.
Race 8 – Airfoil (10) is solid in this $10k claiming sprint; 3-1 second choice is okay. The program favorite is Top Brass (1). He won for $20k last out, yet owner-trainer D. Jacobson drops him in to $10k. Curious placement.
Race 9 – This is the last race for apprentice rider Evin Roman before he leaves for the Eclipse Awards ceremony Thursday in Florida. Roman, who is expected to be named 2017 leading apprentice, rides Salsita (2) in this $20k claiming turf mile. Roman rides fewer low-odds turf mounts than journeymen, but it is surprising Roman is only 2-for-33 on turf this meet and entered Sunday having lost 27 straight on turf. Weird.
