The final work of Gun Runner's career was a flawless one, a maintenance half-mile in 49.14 immediately after the renovation break Monday at Gulfstream Park.
With exercise rider Angel Garcia aboard, Gun Runner was permitted to come out onto the track before the rest of the local population. Biding his time walking from the quarter pole chute down the stretch, the soon-to-be-named Horse of the Year broke away from assistant trainer Scott Blasi aboard the stable pony on the clubhouse turn, eased around to the half-mile pole and proceeded to cruise through his work, Garcia doing a great job keeping him from doing too much while posting splits of 12.53 and 24.81 before galloping out five furlongs in 1:02.11 and pulling up six panels in 1:17.50
Gun Runner will be heavily favored to win Saturday's $16 million Pegasus World Cup, which is to be the final start of his career. Post positions for the race will be drawn late Wednesday morning.
