Santa Anita Thursday handicapping preview

Thursday at Santa Anita …

Race 1 – Class dropper Yaffe (5) “should” win this $12.5k claiming mile, N2L, but 6-5 is no bargain on a veteran mare with one career victory. She lost her only dirt race by more than 14 lengths. Since August, trainer Jeff Mullins is 1-for-17 with dirt favorites. That drought is likely to end on Thursday. Tizno's Dilemma (6) scratched.

Race 2 – Mullins-trained Alternate Rhythm (5) is second choice; he could go favored dropping to maiden-50 with a big blinkers-on work. According to National Turf clocker Andy Harrington, the gelding’s Jan. 18 work was better than the time. Honeymoonz Over (6) drops and trained well for his first start since being gelded. Play it safe and use both? Or, “single” Alternate Rhythm.

Race 4 – This special-weight route for 3-year-old maiden fillies marks the comeback of well-regarded Tequila Sunrise (7), runner-up her most recent start July 29 at Del Mar. “We loved her that day, she ended up chipping an ankle,” trainer Richard Baltas said.

After the chip was removed, Tequila Sunrise was given 90 days. The daughter of Lemon Drop Kid has worked very well for her return. “I think she’s fit enough to run a mile, her last work was super impressive,” Baltas said. Tequila Sunrise is 2-1 second choice, behind seven-start maiden Dancing Belle (3).

Race 5 – A promising runner-up debut at Los Alamitos by Shining Armada (1) stamps the second-time starter the one to beat in this maiden-20 sprint. She is listed at a tempting 4-1. The program favorite is Dressed in Prada (8), runner-up last out in a weak, slow-pace race.

Race 6 – Likely lone front-runner Spin Me a Kiss (5) is the most probable winner on the card when she returns in this N2X turf sprint. Speed has been dominant this month in downhill races on “firm;” Spin Me a Kiss would be a gift if she starts close to her 3-1 program odds. Looking for a longshot underneath? Misstressofthenight (4) has trained super for her first start since August. She is 15-1.

Race 7 – Line Drive (1) is jamming back just six days after a 17-length maiden romp. No thanks on the 6-5 favorite, whose 84 Beyer Figure towers over her rivals. Prefer the third choice in the program, Kiss Of Dahpespe (3).

First post Thursday is 1 p.m.
