Santa Anita Sunday: trends and touts

Preview of the Sunday card at Santa Anita …

Race 1 – Until this week, speed ruled the hill. But the profile changed. Four of six turf sprints this week were won by closers, just one winner gate to wire. Maiden fillies sprint down the hill; favorites Sensible Myth (3) and Classy Atlantic (5) both finished second last out on the hill. This is a split of race 7; this looks like the stronger half.

Race 3 – Want to bet against favorite Be a Lady (4)? Beware, trainer Mark Glatt is 14-for-26 (54 percent) with favorites the past six months. Be a Lady, runner-up two straight, meets easier in this $20k claiming sprint. Another trainer stat from Formulator: Vladimir Cerin is 5 for 16 second-off-the-claim the past year. Cerin starts Princess Kendra (1).

Race 4 – The changing course profile will be tested in this $75k turf sprint stakes. Fly to Mars (1) is the speed; stablemate Calculator (2) is the class. Only six entered, Peter Miller trains the two favorites.

Race 7 – Another turf sprint, this is a split of race 1. Ladybug (3) finished third in her comeback last month; the stretch-runner is the top choice. First-time starter Rockin Ready (9) has worked well for trainer Phil D’Amato and should come out firing. Expect longshot Seattle Drop (4) to improve now that she has a race under her belt. She is 20-1.

Race 8 – Once among the most productive trainer-jockey combos in Southern California, Jerry Hollendorfer and Rafael Bejarano are 2 for 13 this meet following the tough-trip debacle with He Will in a stakes Saturday. Hollendorfer and Bejarano team again with Wedding Blush (1), a six-time winner entered for the optional $40k claim tag in this sprint. Bar Scene (2) reportedly has trained very well for her comeback. The program favorite is Life’s Blessings (10), first start since May.

(Late change: Wedding Blush has been scratched.)

Race 9 – Concur (2) is bred to run long, by Curlin out of a Dynaformer mare. The program favorite runs long for the first time in this maiden turf mile. He could be gone. His main rivals include Fengari (10), compromised by a wide trip last out, and deep closer Pali High (6).

First post Sunday is 12:30.
