Cosmic Burst worked five-eighths Monday at Oaklawn as she prepares for her 3-year-old debut, which is scheduled to come in the $125,000 Martha Washington, trainer Donnie Von Hemel said. The race is Feb. 10 at Oaklawn. Cosmic Burst worked on a fast track, in 1:01.60.
The Martha Washington was a consideration for Cosmic Burst following her win in the $100,000 Trapeze at a mile in December at Remington Park. Von Hemel said last week that the race is now the plan for the daughter of Violence who races for Norma Lee Stockseth and Todd Dunn.
"The Martha Washington would be the next step for Cosmic Burst," Von Hemel said.
The trainer has been keeping on an eye on the division, including the recent Dixie Belle at Oaklawn that Amy's Challenge won in a stretch battle with Mia Mischief.
"We watched with great interest the race from last week, the Dixie Belle," Von Hemel said. "I think both of those fillies ran big races. I believe neither one of them has been two turns. We've got that advantage on them, but they’ve got a race over the track. But, we've got plenty of races under our belt and I think we got some good experience in the races we've had. She's a stakes winner."
Cosmic Burst has won her last three starts, including an allowance at Churchill Downs.
