Sporting Chance, the most accomplished 3-year-old at Oaklawn as the winner of last year's Grade 1 Hopeful at Saratoga, worked five-eighths in company first set Monday. The move came over a fast track on a morning approaching 40 degrees.
Sporting Chance warmed up to the sixteenth pole, accompanied by a pony. He broke off just behind his company in the work that started at the five-eighths pole, tracked his mate around the turn, and left him approaching the sixteenth pole. Sporting Chance proceeded to move past a horse that had broken off before his set, with clockers timing Sporting Chance in 1:01.40 - with a final quarter in 23.60 seconds. The horse galloped out strongly.
Sporting Chance is trained by D. Wayne Lukas.
