Santa Anita: Mourinho leads Wednesday workers

Mourinho, who won his 3-year-old debut in the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Jan. 15, worked seven furlongs in 1:26 at Santa Anita on Wednesday in preparation for a return trip to Oaklawn Park for the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at 1 1-16 miles on Feb. 19.

The $500,000 Southwest Stakes is a key prep for the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby there on April 14.

Mourinho was ridden by jockey Drayden Van Dyke in the workout, which included another runner from trainer Bob Baffert's stable. Mourinho began two lengths behind his stablemate and tracked the pacesetter to early stretch before taking the lead.

Baffert timed Mourinho in six furlongs in 1:13.40 and seven furlongs in 1:25.80.

Zulfikhar, unraced since winning a maiden race at five furlongs at Los Alamitos last July, worked seven furlongs in 1:26 from the gate for Baffert. Zulfikhar was nominated for Saturday's Grade 2 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita, but Baffert said the Southwest Stakes is preferred.

One Fast Broad, the winner of two stakes for California-bred 2-year-old fillies last year, worked five furlongs in 1:01.40. Trained and co-owned by Mick Ruis, One Fast Broad is expected to start in the $200,000 California Cup Oaks at a mile for state-bred fillies on turf on Feb. 19.
