Holding Gold ($3.60) wore down game pace-setter Will Call to win the $50,000 Colonel Power, the first of six stakes Saturday at Fair Grounds. Stalking the pace and wide on the turn, Holding Gold didn't get to Will Call until the final furlong but powered clear with good-looking strides at the wire, stopping the timer in 1:03.60 for about 5 1/2 furlongs on firm turf. John Velazquez rode for trainer Mark Casse and owner Live Oak Farm. The Casse-trained Flashaway came late to get third.
