Accelerate and Pavel work for Big 'Cap, City of Light for Triple Bend, Giant Expectations for one of those two

Accelerate worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 this morning at Santa Anita for a likely start in the $600,000 Santa Anita Handicap on March 10. He comes off a win in the San Pasqual Stakes.

"He'll work three quarters next week and if all goes as planned we'll probably go in the Big 'Cap," said John Sadler, who trains Accelerate.

Sadler said his other option is to wait for the $750,000 Oaklawn Handicap on April 14.

Exercise rider Cerapio Figueroa was aboard Accelerate.

Also working for the Big 'Cap was Pavel, who went six furlongs in 1:14.80 for Doug O'Neill.

Malibu winner City of Light contines to train brilliantly. He went a half-mile in 47 seconds, the best time of 61 at the distance, in preparation for the Triple Bend on March 10.

His trainer, Michael McCarthy, was still reeling Saturday morning from the sudden, unexpected death of his father-in-law, the popular dentist Dr.  Bob McNamara, on Friday.

Giant Expectations, last seen in the Pegasus, worked six furlongs in 1:13.60 for Peter Eurton. He could go in either the Big 'Cap or the Triple Bend.
