Bittersweet 2,000th win for Shug

FLY SO HIGH gave HOF trainer Shug McGaughey his 2,000th career victory when getting a perfect stalking trip as the 7-5 favorite under Jose Ortiz in winning the G2 Davona Dale for the powerhouse Phipps Stable, but the filly had to be pulled up, with Ortiz dismounting when he felt something amiss about a furlong past the wire. Evaluation is taking place, and apparently she did not suffer a catastrophic injury, according to Ortiz, who relayed his comments immediately afterward to our Mike Welsch. Clearly this ongoing situation takes the shine off what would have been something great for Shug.

"She just felt a little funny pulling up, not broke down," said Ortiz, saying he pulled her up for precautionary reasons. "She felt a little bit sore in her left front."

We will have further updates on this situation asap.

TAKE CHARGE PAULA was 2nd in a field of 8 3yo fillies. The complete order was 8-6-3-1.

The Davona Dale is a Ky. qualifying points race (50-20-10-5).

McGaughey, whose stable has amassed more than $141 million in earnings since he began training more than 30 years ago, has had a storybook career, led by his HOF induction and his 2013 Ky. Derby victory with Orb.
