Blue skies Sunday at Santa Anita. Scratches and official track condition later. Meanwhile, early preview (before scratches) …
(Late edit: turf course labelled "soft" per Santa Anita publicity.)
(Second edit: main track "fast" per Santa Anita publicity.)
Race 1 – First-time starter Best of Me (5), the favorite, has shown speed in morning works according to National Turf clocker Andy Harrington. The filly is by Super Saver, moisture in the track would be okay. All systems go for trainer Peter Miller, whose 0-for-17 record with 3yo MSW debut fillies (five years) is misleading – all but one of those started at 6-1 or higher. Miller also entered first-timer Sheza Factor (1), sired by The Factor.
Race 4 – No imagination in this Calbred N1X sprint; Surfing Star (6) stands out based on his highly rated debut. As for the outside post, that might be good. Eight of 16 sprints this week on “wet” were won from one of the two outside posts, irrespective of field size. Track could be "fast" on Sunday, however. What is the knock on Surfing Star? His price. He is 8-5, and going lower.
Race 6 – This N2X is scheduled for a mile and one-eighth on turf; Maestro Dearte (3) seems under-valued as the 5-2 favorite. He ran his final quarter in a slow 24.21 seconds to win a N1X mile last out. However, two starts back on a “good” course, Maestro Dearte came home in 23.56. Lifeline (4) won a nine-furlong N1X last out, finishing in 35.82. Tequila Joe (1) has won the condition, he entered for the optional $62.5k claim tag.
Race 7 – This MSW for fillies is a split of race 1. Broome (7) is favored based mostly on her highly rated runner-up comeback. But that race does not look as flashy after winner Spring Lily returned Saturday to finish a distant third in the G3 Santa Ysabel. First-time starter Hot Autumn (4) is “live.” Fast works, gate speed, bred to win early, the daughter of top debut sire Tiz Wonderful might be the one to catch.
Race 9 – This N1X for fillies and mares is scheduled for a mile and one-eighth on turf; Achira (4) is the legit favorite based on her sharp maiden win at a mile. Achira is not the only contender. Lynne’s Legacy (5) raced above her conditions last out, she returns to N1X. Sasini (2) also merits longshot consideration; her most recent was her best yet.
