Jockeys Kerwin "Boo Boo" Clark and Miguel Mena are at University Hospital in New Orleans after both were injured in a seventh-race accident Thursday afternoon at Fair Grounds. A third jockey involved in the chain-reaction spill, Gabriel Saez, didn't suffer any injuries of consequence and rode the next race.
Clark's mount, a 77/1 shot named Ellashoo, was leading along the inside racing around the far turn when she broke down catastophically in a foreleg. A Fashion Affair, ridden by Mena, was racing mid-pack and along the rail and fell over her stricken rival. A third horse racing inside, Queen Bernardina, ran into A Fashion Affair and also went down, throwing her rider, Saez.
Ellashoo reportedly was euthanized. A Fashion Affair appeared to have avoided serious injury, and trainer Bret Calhoun said Queen Bernardina was back at his barn without apparent problems.
The injuries to Clark and Mena still are being formally diagnosed, but Mena's agent, Richie Price, said it's likely Mena suffered a broken right ankle.
"It's really swollen. Miguel thinks he broke it," Price said.
Mena as of Thursday was leading rider at Fair Grounds. He won the Risen Star Stakes aboard Bravazo, who is expected to race March 24 in the Louisiana Derby.
Multiple sources said Clark appeared to have broken his jaw. He might also have suffered injuries to his wrist, ribs, and lung, but his agent, Charles Ashy Jr., said nothing specific had yet been diagnosed. Clark, a 58-year-old journeyman who has ridden all over the world, was based at Delta Downs this winter until that meet ended Saturday.
