Kerwin Clark broke his jaw and ribs, and suffered a collapsed lung as a result of a three-horse accident on the far turn of Thursday's seventh race at Fair Grounds, according to his agent, Charles Ashy Jr.
The collapsed lung almost certainly resulted from Clark's rib fracture. The lung condition can be serious if left untreated but is manageable in a hospital setting.
Clark's mount, Ellashoo, was leading the eighth race Thursday when she broke down at about the three-eighths pole, falling and causing a chain reaction with two trailing horses, A Fashion Affair, who collided with the striken Ellashoo, and Queen Bernardina, who nearly swerved the wreck but clipped A Fashion Affair and also went down. Ellashoo, a 4-year-old My Pal Charlie mare bred and owned by Rockin H' Farms, was euthanized because of the severity of her injuries.
The other two horses walked back to their barns without serious injury. Gabriel Saez, Queen Bernardina's jockey, continued riding the Thursday card, but Miguel Mena, who was aboard A Fashion Affair, injured his right ankle. Mena's agent, Richie Price, said earlier Thursday evening that Mena believed he'd fractured a bone.
Clark and Mena both were transported to nearby University Medical Center. Mena has won a meet-best 55 races through Thursday's card. Clark was based this winter at Delta Downs and was riding only his eighth race at the ongoing Fair Grounds meet.
Clark, 58, has ridden 3,067 winners from 24,724 mounts, according to Jockey Club Statistics, but he also has professional experience abroad.
