Santa Anita’s main track recovered quickly after the latest rain. Final times were quick for early races Thursday; the surface slowed as the track changed from “good” to “fast.” More rain is on the way later Friday. Meantime, preview (before scratches and changes) …
(Late announcement: race 3 off turf, will be run 6.5 furlongs main track.)
Race 1 – Half the card is made up by six-horse fields including this $8k claiming sprint for fillies and mares. Herunbridledpower (6) and Betdesilvergold (5) are speed; Southern Treasure (1) is late speed. Probably need to include all three in multi-race wagers.
Race 2 – Another small field. Line Drive (2) on the lead; Silverspun Pickup (3) and Krissys Manicure (4) from behind. It’s a seven-furlong sprint for 3-year-old claiming fillies, wagering value tough to find.
Workout analyst Toby Turrell offers a nugget on Silverspun Pickup’s five-furlong work March 10 (SA 5f fst 1:01.20). Turrell, in the Daily Racing Form Santa Anita Clocker Report, wrote: “Hooked in with Baffert beast West Coast. Have to like that she didn’t shy away. Rating: B”
Race 3 – This maiden-75 turf sprint for 3yo fillies is scheduled for the hill. Ladybug (6) is favored dropping from MSW; wouldn’t want to take her at a short price.
(Late announcement: race 3 off turf, will be run 6.5 furlongs main track.)
Race 4 – Another six-horse field, this a $20k claiming route. Stormin Monarch (4) looks like the one to catch, but program favorite I’ll Wrap It Up (2) will keep him company. Dukes Up (6) and Bedeviled (3) will rally late; Muchos Besos (1) double jumps off a big win against a field that included two next-out winners. Small field, but an interesting race.
Race 5 – Price play. Night Time Inc (2) tries her preferred surface (dirt) for the first time in her third U.S. start. She is listed at 8-1 vs. a weak field of N1X fillies and mares. The program favorite is Life’s Blessings (4), trying two turns for the first time in the seventh start of her career. She is an underachiever, beaten favorite four of five allowance races since her maiden win.
Race 6 – What to do with Lewis Vale (4)? Claimed for $25k two back, he won for $10k first off the claim. Now he is in for $6,250. Best horse, worst pattern. Lots of speed in this mile dirt race; the race could unfold in favor of closer Winning Causeway (2).
Race 7 – Toinette (2) is favored in this N1X turf mile for 3yho fillies; Silken Spy (1) is expected to scratch. Toinette overcame trouble to win a maiden race on the hill; her trainer Neil Drysdale is 3-for-5 this meet sprint to route. European import West Palm Beach (8) has trained very well according to National Turf clocker Andy Harrington. West Palm Beach is “live” in her first U.S. start, first for trainer Simon Callaghan.
Race 8 – Maiden-16s go five and a half. Weak group, Awesome E K (7) tepid choice.
