Favorites are taking a beating this afternoon at Cheltenham.
After 9-1 Farclas won the Grade 1 Triumph Hurdle and 33-1 Mohaayed won the County Handicap Hurdle, Kilbricken Storm closed from off the pace to win the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at 33-1.
Those are odds with bookmakers. Mohaayed paid 63.90 pounds to win with the pari-mutuel tote system, while Kilbricken Storm paid 45.30 pounds on the tote. The payoffs support the long-standing theory that longshots pay more with the tote than bookmakers. The theory also states bookmakers have better prices on short-priced horses.
Kilbricken Storm, a 7-year-old gelding by Oscar, finished three lengths in front of 16-1 OK Corral, who was a length in front of 11-4 favorite Santini in the field of 20. Ridden by Harry Cobden, Kilbricken Storm was always well-placed. He closed from fifth to be third with a half-mile remaining and took the lead before the final hurdle.
Trained by Colin Tizzard, Kilbricken Storm has won 3 of 5 starts. He was a winner in an amateur point-to-point in Ireland last April that is not part of his official record.
