If it seems trainer Bob Baffert is winning all of the maiden special weight races for 3-year-olds at the current winter-spring meeting, the idea would be largely accurate.
When Baffert won Saturday's second race with Once On Whiskey, he recorded his 12th maiden win with a 3-year-old since Jan. 1. The meeting began on Dec. 26.
Through Saturday's second race, Baffert leads the trainer's standings with 27 wins, two more than Peter Miller.
Once On Whiskey ($3.40) won a seven-furlong race by 2 3-4 lengths over 9-5 Paddock Pick.
By Bodemeister, Once On Whiskey was purchased for $150,000 at the 2016 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and is owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman. Drayden Van Dyke rode Once On Whiskey on Saturday.
The colt was second in his debut on Feb. 3 to Curly's Rocket, another Baffert-trained maiden race winner.
