Chocolate Martini, claimed for $25,000 in early February, won the richest race of the meet for 3-year-old fillies when scoring a 13-1 upset in the Grade 2, $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks, this track's major prep for the Kentucky Oaks on May 4 at Churchill Downs.
Chocolate Martini finished best in race that benefitted the closers after Classy Act, the even-money favorite, sprinted to fractions of 23.39 seconds for the quarter and a wicked 46.28 seconds for the half in the 1 1/16-mile race. It was too much. She got the staggers after entering the lane, and was engulfed by Chocolate Martini, who beat Eskimo Kisses and Wonder Gadot across the line. Classy Act was fourth.
Chocolate Martini was timed in 1:44.44 for 1 1/16 miles on the fast main track.
Chocolate Martini, a daughter of Broken Vow, is trained by New Orleans native Tom Amoss, who was winning the Fair Grounds Oaks for the first time. She is 2 for 2 since being claimed. She won a first-level allowance in her last start. Both wins for Amoss were in concert with jockey Mitchell Murrill.
