Add Mississippi to the list of prospective starters for next Saturday's Grade 1 Florida Derby. Mississippi worked four furlongs in 49.45 seconds at Palm Meadows on Sunday after which trainer Mark Casse said he will compete in the Florida Derby if he has a good week. Mississippi has captured one of four starts but had one of his losses, a second place finish behind Noble Indy in an allowance race here on Jan. 11, flattered after that one captured the Louisiana Derby on Saturday.
The probable list of Florida Derby starters now includes, along with Mississippi, Audible, Catholic Boy, who worked four furlongs in 48.65 at Gulfstream on Sunday, Fire When Ready, Millionaire Runner, Promises Fulfilled, Speed Franco, Storm Runner, Strike Power and Tip Sheet.
Entries for the one mile and one eighth Florida Derby will be drawn Wednesday.
