My Boy Jack, who finished third in the Louisiana Derby on Saturday – beaten three-quarters of a length – emerged from the race well, but trainer Keith Desormeaux said he is concerned that the 32 points My Boy Jack has won’t be enough to get into the Derby. Desormeaux said he would prefer not to run My Boy Jack again prior to the Derby, but will monitor the point standings and consider another start.
In the years since Churchill Downs went to a point system, 32 has been enough to make the field, but with numerous races still to be run worth 100 points for first and 40 for second, there is the potential for several horses to leapfrog My Boy Jack -- who is currently in the top 20 -- in coming weeks.
