The undefeated Magnum Moon retained his sharpness by working a solid half-mile in 48.07 seconds Saturday morning at Palm Beach Downs. Magnum Moon, winner of the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes and headed next to the Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn, worked in company with Vino Rosso, who is preparing for next Saturday’s Grade 2 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on April 7.
Magnum Moon, working on the inside with exercise rider Nick Bush up, started a length in front of Vino Rosso, who had jockey John Velazquez up. Magnum Moon went his opening quarter in 24.68 seconds.
Vino Rosso moved within a half-length of Magnum Moon after the first eighth but dropped back a little bit on the turn. Magnum Moon was still a length or so clear in upper stretch with Bush not asking for much. Meanwhile, Velazquez was pushing on Vino Ross down the lane to finish, yet he still finished two lengths back of Magnum Moon at the wire. Vino Rosso was timed in 48.27 seconds.
Vino Rosso did gallop out past Magnum Moon around the turn and went out seven furlongs in 1:29.20.
Trainer Todd Pletcher noted that the Palm Beach Downs surface has been a little bit dull to lack of rain. He also believes the track tends to favor horses who are working on the inside.
Pletcher said the workout “is an indication of the two horses’ different styles. Vino Rosso kind of faded on the turn a little it then came back on, had a very strong gallop out. We feel like he’s a horse that wants more distance so we’re looking forward to getting him out to a mile and an eighth and beyond.”
Last week, Vino Rosso outworked Audible – running in today’s Florida Derby at Gulfstream. In both works, Vino Rosso did not wear blinkers, equipment he wore in the Tampa Bay Derby where he finished fourth. Pletcher said he is considering removing the blinkers for the Wood Memorial, but won’t decide for certain for a few days.
For Magnum Moon, the work was his first since his 3 1-2-length victory in the Rebel on March 17, his third win in as many starts. He is on track to run in the Arkansas Derby on April 14.
“Magnum Moon maintained his form very well since the Rebel,” Pletcher said. “It was a good work. He’s been training forwardly ever since the Rebel, shipped back great. He was looking to breeze this morning.”
At Palm Meadows Saturday morning, Good Magic, the reigning 2-year-old champion, worked a half-mile in 48 seconds in preparation for a start in next Saturday’s Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Good Magic worked in company with Mask, who hasn’t run since winning the Mucho Macho Man Stakes. Mask is being pointed to the Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby card, according to trainer Chad Brown.
Good Magic is looking to bounce back from a third-place finish in the Fountain of Youth Stakes on March 3.
Speaking of Good Magic, Brown said, “he worked really well, galloped out particularly well. He looks fitter, stronger, doing really well.”
Brown said Good Magic will ship to Keeneland on Monday with a bevy of other horses he plans to run at the Keeneland meet.
