The American sprinter Mind Your Biscuits won the Group 1 Golden Shaheen Sprint at Meydan Racecourse in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday for the second consecutive year.
A well-timed ride by jockey Joel Rosario was the difference. Closing from last in the final quarter-mile, Mind Your Biscuits caught an unlucky X Y Jet to win by a head. Roy H, the champion sprinter of 2017, was a game third, finishing three-quarters of a length behind X Y Jet.
The first three finishers are based in the United States.
Mind Your Biscuits, trained by Chad Summers for a partnership that includes Head of Plains Partners, and J Stables, won the 2017 Golden Shaheen by three lengths. He faced a tougher field on Saturday.
Jordan Sport, a stakes winner in Dubai this year, set the pace, closely followed by X Y Jet. Roy H was well-placed in fourth racing three-wide through the first three furlongs of the six-furlong race.
X Y Jet took the lead in the final furlong and was challenged by Roy H, who was second in the final sixteenth. Neither could contend with Mind Your Biscuits, who rallied to grab the lead in the last stride with a three-wide move.
A 5-year-old New York-bred by Posse, Mind Your Biscuits has won 7 of 21 starts and earned $3,719,286. The $2 million Golden Shaheen was his first stakes win since the Grade 2 Belmont Sprint last July. Later in 2017, Mind Your Biscuits was third in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Del Mar in November behind Roy H and second to Sharp Azteca in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Dec. 2.
The Golden Shaheen was Mind Your Biscuits's second start of he year. He was second in an allowance race with a $75,000 claiming option at seven furlongs at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 9.
