New York Claiming Championship Day features ten starter allowance races that get more difficult as the day moves on, including a late double that consists of 23 betting interests.
The card kicks off at 1:15 ET. There is no carryover in the pick six after one winning ticket cashed yesterday for over $61k.
The lone two-turn route on the card is the Mr. Sinatra, carded as Race #5. Rudy Rodriguez, who notched his 1,000th career win as a trainer in the last race on Friday, saddles heavy favorite and horse to beat Control Group.
Control Group has won five of his last six races, including three in a row on the way into this, all in stakes company over this nine-furlong distance. While he has had a couple of soft trips on the lead during his current streak, he also projects to play out as the main speed in the Mr. Sinatra.
While disappointed in the last run from Turco Bravo, I can give him one more chance today based on his efforts two and three starts back over this distance. He has clearly lost a step from his top form, but he was against the track and never stopped trying in the Jazil two starts back, and he ran well to close some ground after losing early position in that Claiming Crown race that was dominated up front last December at Gulfstream.
The Peeping Tom (Race #6) appears to go through Schivarelli, who is dropping out of two straight stakes races out of town. He earned a 98 Beyer for his blowout win the last time he was in NY (though that race came out of Rudy's barn) and he has an adaptable running style.
He is tough with his best race, but the competition runs deep in this race. For a price, I went with Will Did It, who may simply be off form, though he had no chance behind a dominant front-running winner last time, and caught a wet track prior to that.
His good race is quite good, and he also has a running style which gives his rider some options.
Harlan Punch is way the horse to beat in the Caixa Eletronica (Race #7). He has been holding strong form over a long series of races for trainer David Jacobson, and if he shows up today with anything approaching his last two starts, he is too good for these horses.
It is an interesting race behind him, but I am not trying to beat Harlan Punch.
Rudy holds a strong hand with the complementary duo of Frostie Anne (speed) and Cotton Candy Cutie (stalker) in the Sis City (Race 8).
I am using them but will try to beat them with the underappreciated Spring for More.
Spring for More isn't really an allowance horse, but she held her own while facing that tougher competition over six straight starts dating back to last October, before dropping in class to dominate $32k claimers last time.
The More to Tell (Race 9) is a competitive race over a one-turn mile, with cases to be made for several of the runners. I am going to try to get Marriage Fever in there somewhere at a price, but he will need his best race - and a trip from the rail - in order to contend.
The Kelly Kip (Race #10) has pulled another contentious field, but I am not trying to beat likely favorite Very Very Stella, who has been racing in excellent form for David Jacobson. He was a very unlucky loser last time after coming wide and closing ground to just miss in a paceless sprint vs. better horses than he faces here today.
