Magnum Moon improved his perfect record to four wins with an emphatic front-running victory in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.
Luis Saez put Magnum Moon right on the lead in the 1 1/8-mile Arkansas Derby and he proved clearly best to win by four lengths despite drifting outward through the stretch.
He paid $3.60 as the favorite in the nine-horse field.
Magnum Moon set leisurely fractions of 23.34, 48.60, and 1:13.39 while under token pressure from Tampa Bay Derby winner Quip. Nearing the stretch, Tenfold moved up three wide and Solomini advanced four wide. But Magnum Moon quickly spurted clear and left his rivals behind.
Magnum Moon completed the course in 1:49.86.
Quip held on for second by a head over Solomini, with Combatant a neck farther back in fourth.
Magnum Moon has made all four of his starts this year for trainer Todd Pletcher. He won a Gulfstream Park maiden race in January, an optional-claimer at Tampa Bay Downs in February, and the Grade 2 Rebel here at Oaklawn on March 17.
