My Boy Jack secured a berth in the Kentucky Derby with a head victory over a stubborn Telekinesis in the Grade 3, $200,000 Lexington Stakes Saturday Keeneland. The victory provided him with 20 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby, giving him 52 points, well above what figures to be the necessary threshold to gain entry in what is regularly an oversubscribed field.
As is his custom, My Boy Jack ($5) rallied from far back, and though wide on the second turn, was able to save ground at least in the first turn of the race despite his outside draw. He made a long, sustained run on the final turn and gradually wore down Telekinesis, who had surged to the lead from a stalking position in early stretch.
The time seemed on the slow side - 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.22 after the Grade 3 Ben Ali had been won by Rated R Superstar earlier in 1:49.31 for 1 1/8 miles.
Pony Up ran third, 2 1/2 lengths behind the top duo, and comebacking Greyvitos, the early pacesetter, was fourth.
