Ping Hai Star can become the fifth horse to win the Hong Kong Derby and Queen Elizabeth II Cup in the same year in Sunday's eighth race at Sha tin Racecourse in Hong Kong.
Ping Hai Star won the Hong Kong Derby for 4-year-olds in his first start at 1 1-4 miles, flying from the back of a 14-horse field to prevail by 1 3-4 lengths under Ryan Moore. Joao Moreira, the leading rider here, has the mount on Sunday. Moore is not riding here this afternoon.
This $3.05 million race will be a class test fo Ping Hai Star against a field of largely local runners with proven credentials. Time Warp, trained by Tony Cruz, has favorable form at 1 1-4 miles, though he was a disappointing 10th in a mile race on April 8. He deserves to be forgiven for that loss.
Pakistan Star is talented, but a knucklehead who has been known to come to a stop or slow considerably in his races only to resume running. He did that in his last start and finished fourth in a Group 2 at a mile. His best effort would be good enough.
